The tablets have several functions. One of them enables the translation of text. It is not an elegant solution, but it is easier than learning the language or translating all available text by hand. Did you not realize this?

I just thought, of course, that everyone was speaking Japanese very fluently, or that we were supposed to force other people to read everything out loud. It seemed a little roundabout, but this is much better than learning all the languages. Visual and auditory processing for languages have similarities in brain activation but are different enough that guaranteeing you could process both at a high level would have been incredibly invasive, as well as difficult with what we have available to us at this point in time. Understanding speech seemed more practical than prioritizing reading, and it was much easier to add adaptive translation to the tablets.
